Today starts the fifth six weeks of the school year; the spring semester is historically the toughest for students when it comes to turning in work and keeping up with grades. Please remind students to focus on homework and classwork and attend tutorials if needed. I ask that you continue to remind your student that high performers attend teacher tutorials even if they are not in danger of failing. Update for the Nurse 1/31

January 31, 2017

Several flu cases have been confirmed at RHS this week. Symptoms of flu may include fever, cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, body aches, tiredness, and/or headache. Flu is highly contagious. Be sure to remind your children to cover their cough and sneeze, wash hands after using the restroom or before eating, and avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.

Please ensure that your child stays home from school if he or she has a fever. Your child should not return to school until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.

If you have any concerns about your child's health, don't hesitate to make an appointment with your child's primary healthcare provider.

Please respond this email or contact our nurse Leah Spiers if you have any questions. Please provide an attendance note when they return. Thank you for assisting RHS in keeping our students healthy and safe.

January is School Board Recognition month! I hope you will join me in expressing appreciation for the Rockdale School Board for their dedication and hard work. Serving as a trustee is a tremendous undertaking and the RISD Board of Trustees is an extraordinary group. Their commitment to students, parents, teachers, programs, and schools has a significant positive impact on the community and directly relates to the current and future successes of Rockdale schools. Thank you RISD Board of Trustees for all you do!

It has been an exciting week at RHS we received the STAAR End of Course retest results from December. Our scores look GREAT and I am proud of how hard our students and staff worked. Thirty-six tests were passed during the retest which is a huge accomplishment for our students. We met with students Friday to share scores and will send home the official Confidential Student Reports (CSR) with detailed information about the exam results as soon as we receive them. Please don’t hesitate to contact the campus if you have questions regarding the results.

The candy bars have been ordered to begin the prom fundraising for this year. Junior parents that are interested in helping with Prom 2017 and/or Project Graduation 2018, please respond to this email so we can begin planning.

Just a reminder Monday, January 16, 2017 is a school holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.

It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over. With January begins a big push to make sure all of our students are ready for the STAAR End of Course Exams, Advanced Placement Tests, ACT/SAT exams, and to make sure that our seniors are ready to make their big move to life after high school. So much of what we do is try to get students ready for what is to come. These next few months will move fast, and our students have a great deal to learn before they leave us in May. Be prepared as the academics step up a little more and our expectations continue to increase. Report cards were sent home with students today.

We will begin our FLEX schedule again starting on Tuesday as a way to provide ongoing student interventions and enrichments. Please see the FLEX schedule on the RHS Webpage for more information. Teachers are also checking planners and folders as a way to help our students stay organized.

Freshmen students will be traveling with AVID to Texas A&M University on January 11th or 12th. On the 11th, students with last names M-Z will stay on campus and take the English 1 MOCK EOC, while students A-L will travel with AVID. On January 12th A-L students will stay on campus and take the English 1 MOCK EOC, while students M-Z travel with AVID.

Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing students Wednesday, January 4th to start the second semester. Report cards from the third six weeks will be distributed to students the week of January 9th. When we return next week spring semester schedules will be available to students in the rotunda.

Parents if you have had a change of address, email, or a new phone number please contact Gloria Thomas (512) 430-6140 so that we can update your emergency contact information.

Just a reminder we are at that time of year when students need to restock paper, pencils, and folders. Take a few minutes this weekend and inventory the backpack; we want to start the New Year off on a good note for homework and classwork!

Best wishes to you and your family for a great 2017.

RHS Newsletter

December 9, 2016

It’s the last school week of 2016; it’s hard to believe we are halfway through the school year. Our goal is to finish the semester strong and focused on academics.  Encourage your student to check Skyward, work with teachers to reach their academic goals, and study for midterms!

Students received exemption letters TODAY to allow them to plan for next week.  The exemption letters are due to the front office by 4:00pm Tuesday, December 13th. A copy of the RHS Fall Exam Schedule is also available on the RHS webpage and the RHS Facebook.

Candy Grams: PTO will sell candy canes next week during lunches for $1.00 to be delivered on December 13th.

*Don’t Mess With Texas Scholarship: The 2017 Don't Mess with Texas Scholarship Contest invites Texas high school seniors to apply for one of three scholarships to help with college expenses. Applications will be accepted through March 27, 2017. For more information about the scholarship and application process visit DontMessWithTexas.Org

*PSAT Exam Results (juniors): Kaplan is hosting a free, interactive, live online PSAT score interpretation workshop for parents, on December 18th, at 5pm.  Students can access their PSAT scores on December 12th online. Students will receive an email through the email they provided on the day of PSAT testing. Counselors will go to classrooms in January to interpret scores to the students. If you have trouble accessing your PSAT scores you can respond to this email and I can email them.

*SAT Exam: The registration deadline for the January 21st SAT exam is December 21st. If you have a junior that hasn’t taken the SAT I would recommend this date; it gives them time to get results and study to raise their score if needed before senior year.

Students received progress reports in 3rd period Tuesday. We now have 10 school days remaining in the semester.  Please remind your students to stay on top of their assignments and studying for exams. Students will receive information about their midterm exemptions Friday, December 9th.

During the holiday season there are a lot of opportunities for students to volunteer on campus and in the community. This is a great opportunity for students to earn hours toward Silver Cord of Service. Opportunities for service are listed in the rotunda and on the RHS webpage.
