The start of another school year begins TOMORROW.  I hope you all had a wonderful summer!

There are a few important items to note below as we prepare for the first day of school.

First day of School: First period begins at 8:00 and the school day ends at 3:30. The bell schedule is available on the RHS webpage.  Students should bring something to write with and a notebook/spiral to take notes. Summer reading projects are due Friday, August 25th but students will begin discussions/assignments of the reading Tuesday!

Nurse / Medicine: If your student will require any medication (over the counter/prescription) during the school hours the parent/guardian is required to sign in the medication to the school nurse. Prescription medication must have the pharmacy label intact and legible.

Schedules: Students will be able to enter the building at 7:30. All students will receive a copy of their schedule (on white paper) in the Rotunda before first period. The last day to request a schedule change is Friday, August 25th.

Buses, Parking, and Safety:

  • The bus routes are available on the RISD Webpage.
  • Parking permits for the high school are available in the front office; students need to bring a copy of their insurance, valid driver’s license, license plate number, and $5.00 to the front office before August 25th.
  • Please be careful when driving through the neighborhoods as students return back to school.  We will have many students walking and riding their bikes to schools this year.

See you tomorrow! We are looking forward to a great year at Rockdale High School!

Tiffany Commerford

Principal

*Dual Credit Information: Classes begin Monday, August 28th and the bus will leave from the front parking lot promptly at 7:20am. All Temple College students will need to sign up for the GroupMe reminder with Mrs. Windham. We will have a mandatory Temple College student meeting Friday, August 25th at 9:00am in the library. If you have questions about purchasing your textbooks please contact Mrs. Windham ASAP KWindham@rockdaleisd.net

Senior Brag Ads: The Yearbook Staff is currently selling Senior “Brag” Ad space in our 2017-2018 Yearbook. Buying an ad for your senior is a wonderful opportunity to forever document the pride you have for your child, as well as the hopes and dreams you have for their future. Senior Brag Ad contract. Contact GLWalker@rockdaleisd.net

School Supplies: At high school each student could have an individual schedule so the school supply list you are used to from their younger years is hard to share because the supplies they need will depend on their class choice. Students will receive information about supplies the first day of school and will have a week to get them. We suggest students bring a spiral and something to write with the first day of school. All students will need: 2 or 3 inch binder, dividers, pencil pouch, notebook paper, and blue or black pens, and highlighters.

Support Shirts: spirit shirts supporting Project Graduation are for sale in the front office or with a senior for $15.00. The last day to order is August 31st.

Volunteer / Service Hours: If your student is trying to get a head start on volunteer hours for the 2017-2018 school year we have a list of activities posted in the office that they can do on campus before school starts.

We look forward to seeing you at Meet the Tigers Monday night to celebrate their upcoming season.

We are looking for a campus representative or two for the Campus Education Council (CEC). If you are interested in being the high school representative for CEC please respond to this email.

July 2017

It is hard to believe that it is almost AUGUST – summer is flying by!  I hope you are enjoying your break I have shared upcoming dates and information below.

I have linked the dates for the SAT/ACT for 2017-2018.  The test dates offered in Rockdale are noted but know that the schools near us (Cameron, Taylor, Hutto, Pflugerville…) offer testing on the other dates.

The SAT practice site is available through a partnership with The College Board, which administers the SAT, and Khan Academy, a leader in online education. By logging on to www.satpractice.org, students are able to access personalized practice recommendations that are tailored to their own strengths, weaknesses, and progress.  This site is also great for PSAT practice; all juniors will take the PSAT October 11th and sophomores will take the PSAT February 27th.   There are many scholarships associated with high ACT, SAT, and PSAT scores please encourage your student to take advantage of the free practice sites.

Freshmen camp (Class of 2021) just a reminder that camp forms were sent home to all 8th graders in May.  We are still taking registrations for freshmen camp and need them ASAP so we can order shirts and food.  There are extra forms in the front office and on the RHS webpage.

I have linked the RISD dress code  as a reminder for those of you doing back to school shopping and haircuts.

Class of 2021 - Freshmen Information

May 9, 2017

Class of 2021 Parents,

You will receive an envelope in the mail from Rockdale High School this week with information regarding your child’s schedule and upcoming events. Below are details about the items you will receive. If you do not receive an envelope or have questions about what you received please let us know.

Information in every envelope:

Course Verification Form (white form) – this form has the classes that your child registered for in February. Please double check that the courses are correct. This is the last chance to make any changes before schedules are shared in August.

Freshmen “Fish” Camp (neon pink form) – this form has information about freshmen camp on August 9th. Camp is a great way to start a successful career at Rockdale High School and we hope that you are able to join us. Freshmen schedules will also be available during camp. Because we are ordering shirts and food for this event we need students to pre-register for planning purposes.

Other information that may be present in your envelope:

Invitation to a Lemonade Social (green form) – for life skills students that will have Mrs. Elliott as a teacher next year we will host a parent and student meet and greet to help students transition and tour the campus.

Native Speaker Spanish (white form on letterhead) – this letter notifies parents of the results of their child’s Spanish Exam and if they are enrolled in the Native Spanish course for next year.

Pre-AP Summer Reading (blue form) – this handout has directions for the summer reading project required for students enrolled in Pre-AP English. The project/assignment are due Friday, September 1st. If your student cannot afford to purchase a summer reading book please contact Ms. Commerford 512-430-6262 to check out a book for the summer.

Information for planning:

School Supplies:

At high school each student could have an individual schedule so the school supply list you are used to from the past nine years is hard to share because the supplies they need will depend on their class choice. Students will receive information about supplies the first day of school from their teachers and will have a week to get them.

All freshmen will need: 3 inch binder, 8 dividers, pencil pouch, notebook paper, 2 or 3 composition books, pencils, pens, and highlighters if you want to beat the rush but know that more supplies may be required.

Upcoming Events:

Two-a-days – Monday, August 1st (volleyball & band)

Two-a-days – Monday, August 7th (football)

Freshmen Camp – Wednesday, August 9th 1:00-4:00pm

Meet the Tigers – Monday, August 14th

First Day of School – Tuesday, August 22nd

Pep Rally – Friday, September 8th 3:00pm

RHS Open House – Tuesday, September 12th 6:00-7:30pm

If you are receiving this email you are signed up through Skyward. We send a weekly newsletter to high school parents each Friday during the school year. You can also view the newsletter on our campus webpage each Friday. Throughout the summer we send updates and important back to school information. We also update our campus webpage and campus Facebook/ Twitter regularly. Consider making these sites a favorite to help with planning for the fall.

If there is anything RHS can do to help your transition please let us know (512) 430-6140 or respond to this email. We look forward to seeing you soon!
