Woohoo, we finished the final round of STAAR EOC! We were impressed with the student’s hard work and their diligence during testing. This week students will finish Advanced Placement exams. Progress reports were distributed to students yesterday 6th period.

Congratulations to the RHS teachers and staff recognized at last night’s reception: Robert Johnson – perfect attendance, Julie Hrozek & Becky Ingram – 5 years of service, Kelly Windham – 10 years of service, Debra Neal – 15 years of service, Bart Gibbs – 20 years, and Marilyn Rasmussen – retirement / 27 years.

We still have three weeks of school left. Please remind students be here and be on time. Students still need to bring their school supplies; we have plenty of school left! Seniors don’t have any more days off so please make sure they are here until the end.

*Athletic Physicals: Forms will be given to students on Monday, May 15 and will be due back on Wednesday, May 17.  Physicals will be done on Thursday, May 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for $10.00 a person in the High School Gym.

*Baccalaureate Service – The Rockdale Ministerial Alliance will be hosting the Baccalaureate Service on May 21st at 2:00 p.m. at Meadowbrook Baptist Church of Rockdale.  All graduating seniors are invited to attend this special and memorable service that will be led by clergy and members of the graduating student body.  Students are encouraged to wear their graduation robes and will be honored and blessed for their hard work and achievement.  

*Cafeteria Charges – Friday, May 5th is the last day for students and teacher to charge meals to their accounts. They will no longer be able to charge a breakfast or lunch, they will be issued the alternative meal of a cheese sandwich, fruit and milk if they are unable to pay or have a negative balance on their account. 

*Canned Food Drive - Students can bring canned food for the Rockdale Food Pantry to dismiss detention and Saturday School. Four cans = 1 day of detention (maximum 3 days) or 12 cans for 1 day of Saturday School (maximum 2 days). Students must check expiration dates as no cans will be taken if any cans have expired or will expire this month. Students can bring canned food thru Friday, May 12th at noon.

College Readiness Night - Wednesday, May 10th at 5:30pm in the RHS Library we will host a Sophomore/Junior - College Readiness Night.

Driver Education Class – information for upcoming driver education class in Rockdale is available on the RISD webpage or in the front office. Students interested in participating in the class must be 15 years old before July 6, 2016. RISD students pay $220 to register. The balance of the fee will be paid for RISD students by the RHS ACE grant. Please see Mrs. Thomas in the high school office May 16-27. You must pay with a check or a Money Order made out to Region VI ESC (NO CASH).

*Exam Registration - The registration deadline for the June 3rd SAT exam in Rockdale is Tuesday, May 9th. The campus code is 445-925. If you are eligible for free or reduced lunch please see your counselor for information on how to register at a reduced cost.

The next round of testing for the STAAR End of Course Exams is scheduled for this week and we will start advanced placement exams. Since a large number of students and teachers will be involved in testing, we will follow an alternate bell schedule and lunch will be later than normal for the students but we have provided snacks for testers. Seniors will follow their regular schedule and are expected to be in attendance all week. Please make sure students get plenty of rest in preparation for the exams, I know they are ready and will do great things!

Battle of the Bell Design: Juniors can submit a t-shirt design for the 2017 Battle of the Bell t-shirts until May 12th. See Mrs. Neal for information.

Yearbook: Senior parents the yearbook staff has only a few Senior “Brag” Ad spaces left in our 2016-2017 Yearbook.  Buying an ad for your senior is a wonderful opportunity to forever document the pride you have for your child, as well as the hopes and dreams you have for their future.  It is a personal touch you can put on the end of this very special year.

Upcoming Due Dates & Forms for Seniors

Senior Parents,

I met with seniors TODAY and shared the Commencement Guide & Expectations packet, Upcoming Events, Project Graduation RSVP, and Project Graduation Waiver.

Cap & Gowns were delivered to campus last week. If your child still needs a Cap & Gown they are available for purchase $65.00 from Cyndi Neumeyer in the office 512-430-6140.  If your child is unable to purchase a Cap & Gown please contact Ms. Commerford ASAP.

The signed Project Graduation RSVP and Project Graduation Waiver are due Monday, May 1stProject Graduation meeting at the Rockdale General Store Monday, May 1st at 6:00pm.

I have linked the Graduation Expectations packet above but please remind seniors the last page requires a parent signature and student signature and is due to Ms. Scruggs or the Office Monday, May 8th. 

I also reminded students that all fines and fees must be paid by Friday, May 19th if you have questions about fines or fees please contact Gloria Thomas 512-430-6152.  Credit hours and credit recovery classes are due Thursday, May 25th by 4:00pm. 

Seniors are required to attend the Cap & Gown Parade Thursday, May 25th at 9:00am AND Graduation Practice Friday, May 26th at 9:00am.

Keep in mind a lot of local scholarships deadlines are next week. Please remind your students to keep applying for scholarships.

Congratulations to our State UIL Academic Qualifier, State Tennis Qualifiers and Regional Track Qualifiers this week. 

I look forward to seeing students at Prom tomorrow night at the Patterson Center!  Please review the Prom Expectations . The prom committee has done a fabulous job of organizing the event and the decorations are gorgeous.

Students are invited to help clean-up prom 10:00am-1:00pm Sunday; this can count for a Saturday School or credit hours if needed.

*Lifeguards / Pool Manager: The city of Rockdale is seeking qualified applications for Lifeguard and Pool Manager please apply in person at Rockdale City Hall.

Prom: Prom will be at the Patterson Center this Saturday from 8-midnight. All juniors and seniors must present the personalized ticket they received in their Prom invitation for entry into the Prom. Doors will close at 9:30pm and students who leave will not be allowed to re-enter.

RISD Technology Student Worker: Applications are available in the office for RHS students 16 or older interested in applying for a paid position in the technology department for summer and 2017-18 school year.  Interested students should sign-up in the office by May 1st.

Texas Workforce: There is information in the office for graduating seniors interested in paid training and summer work through the Workforce.  Seniors who receive free & reduced lunch or our a parent are eligible for this program.  Please see Mrs. Neal for more information.

It was another extremely busy and successful week for Rockdale High School.  Congratulations to Boys & Girls Track, Boys & Girls Golf, and the Big Blue Band on their successes this past week.  Good luck to Regional Tennis as they finish their second day of play today in College Station.

**Senior Parents:  Graduation orders including announcements and caps & gowns will be delivered to campus Friday, April 21st in the Rotunda during lunches 11:30-1:00pm.  For students that did not pre-order, items may be purchased April 21st with cash or money order.  Contact Ms. Commerford for more information.  If your student cannot afford a cap & gown please have them see Ms. Commerford ASAP.

As of Monday, we will are down to the final six weeks of school.  Where did the time go?  Senior parents make sure you have talked to your child about fines and make-up hours 30 school days until graduation.

Final Prom Planning Info - Volunteers Needed

Dear Junior and Junior Parents:

Prom 2017 is here! We wanted to let everyone know the dates and times of prom set-up and items that we still need.

The Theme is Garden of Glamour. We have Kim Gresham from Thorndale helping us (she has decorated for many weddings, anniversaries, proms, and other events).

Setting Up and Decorating:

We will be setting up and decorating on Wednesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 20 at the Patterson Center. We will begin at 10 a.m. and work until late in the evenings on both days. We need help from parents (moms and dads) during the days. We need help from parents and juniors during the evenings. If you can help, please text one of the numbers at the bottom of this letter and include your name and the dates/times that you can help.

Juniors who signed up to donate food or who worked at prom workdays on Sunday, April 2 or Thursday, April 13 will be excused from school for the afternoon of Thursday, April 20 to help decorate at the Patterson Center.

Food:

We are still in need of some food items for prom. If you can bring one or more of the following items, please text Susan at 512-429-1445: 2 large containers (bags) of purple grapes, 3 containers of strawberries, pineapple chunks, ham cubes.

If you signed up to bring food, you can bring it to the Patterson Center on Wednesday or Thursday and put it in the refrigerator (please put your name on it) or you can bring it to the Patterson Center from 6-7 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.

Decorations:

If you have any ferns or green plants (small and large) that you will allow us to use for the evening, please let us know. We will put your name on the bottom of the plants and make sure that they are returned to you.

Senior Shirts & Project Graduation

Seniors received order forms to order their senior shirts. Please return your forms and money ASAP.

Student will receive Project Graduation permission forms this week. Please return them to the office ASAP.

Caps & Gown/ Announcements

Balfour will be on campus Friday during student lunches to deliver caps & gowns. If you have a balance on your order it will need to be paid before students will receive the items. If you aren’t ready to pay your balance the items will be held in the office until you are able to pay for them.

If you did not have a chance to order your cap & gown you can purchase them Friday from the representative.

**If you cannot afford a cap & gown please reply to this email OR contact Ms. Commerford ASAP. We will have 3-5 extras but they aren’t size specific so the sooner we know the better so you can look your best on graduation day.

College Visits

The last day to take a school excused college visit is May 1st.

DAEP

If assigned DAEP after April 17th, students will not walk at graduation per board policy.

 

National Honor Society

NHS Stole Payments OR Rental Agreement are due to Ms. Rasmussen TODAY.

Completed NHS Community Service forms are due to Mrs. Rasmussen by April 25th for NHS students in order to earn their honor stole for graduation.

Silver Cord of Service

Silver Cord of Service volunteer forms are due to Ms. Commerford by May 1st for students interested in earning a cord for graduation. This requires 50 hours of service. If students are applying NHS hours to Silver Cord of Service they must submit a copy of the hours with their form.

TSI Exam

Depending on your student’s ACT/SAT score they may need to take the TSI exam to enter Junior College or University in the fall. Temple College is offering test sessions 9:00am -3:00pm for $25.00 on April 22 and May 6 & 20. Please see a counselor for more information and paperwork needed to register. We also have access to online study materials if students need to retake an exam please contact Ms. Commerford for log-in information.

It has been an exciting and busy week at RHS. Boys and girls tennis won district and are advancing to Regionals, boys and girls golf had a great first day of district, and many of our student participated in hosting Book-a-Poolza last night. There are great pictures on the Rockdale High School Facebook page of the players and events. With all of the events, great weather, and Senioritis please be aware of upcoming due dates and events. Monday begins the final grading cycle of the school year – please remind students to stay on top of their grades! We are also preparing for the next round of End of Course Exams and AP Exams the first two weeks of May so attendance is critical. 

Prom Guest forms are due to the office (with a copy of the guest driver’s license) by Wednesday, April 19th at 9:00am. Many juniors still owe prom fundraiser money they will not receive an invitation to prom until their money is turned in. 

Please consider providing feedback to RISD and RHS by completing the Parent Involvement Survey.

Color Guard Tryouts: The Rockdale HS Color Guard is currently looking for additional members for the 2017-2018 school year.  Auditions will take place on Monday, April 24th from 4pm to 6pm in the Rockdale HS Band Hall.  An informational meeting and practices for the auditions will begin on April 10th at 3:45pm in the Rockdale HS Band Hall.   The last day to sign up is Thursday, April 13th.

We are 8 school weeks from graduation and the end of school! Continue to remind students to attend tutorials and stay on top of their grades. This is the final week of the 5th six weeks.

Seniors

  • Scholarship deadlines are CLOSE! Be sure to turn in applications and letters of recommendation.
  • Start paying your fines, returning RISD materials, and finishing credit recovery!

Just a reminder we are at that time of year when students need to restock paper and pencils. Take a few minutes this weekend and inventory the backpack; we want to finish the year off on a good note for homework and classwork!

*Color Guard Tryouts: The Rockdale HS Color Guard is currently looking for additional members for the 2017-2018 school year. The color guard performs as part of the Rockdale HS “Big Blue Band” during marching season. If you have any musical and/or dance experience we invite you to try-out for the color guard.  Auditions will take place on Monday, April 24th from 4pm to 6pm in the Rockdale HS Band Hall.  An informational meeting and practices for the auditions will begin on April 10th at 3:45pm in the Rockdale HS Band Hall.  Detailed practice schedules and an informational packet will be handed out at the meeting. The next round of testing for the STAAR End of Course Exams is scheduled for March 28th and March 30th. Students will take the English I and English II assessments. Seniors are asked to report at 11:30am Tuesday and Thursday and we will meet in the auditorium to discuss end of year events.  Please make sure students get plenty of rest in preparation for the exam, I know they are ready and will do great things!

As the weather gets warmer, the boundaries of dress code get stretched.  Please be sure that your student’s attire matches school expectations.  Shorts/skirts must reach mid-thigh.  Oversized arm-holes are not allowed.   No facial hair is permitted.  Overall, attire should appear modest and school-appropriate.

Applications for 2017-18 classes:  are available in the office.  Student trainer, AVID 2/3, Career Prep, Ag Mech/Welding, and Health Sciences. All applications are due 3/31.

The prom committee is looking for donations of greenery for prom. They would also like for parents to donate finger foods (sandwich trays, fruit trays, cookies...) for the event April 22nd.  If you can help in any way please respond to this email or attend the meeting next Wednesday.

Driver Education Class: information for upcoming driver education class in Rockdale is available on the RHS webpage or in the front office.  Students interested in participating in the class must be 15 years old before July 5, 2017. RISD students pay $235 to register. The balance of the fee will be paid for RISD students by the RHS ACE grant. Please see Mrs. Thomas in the high school office May 15-26 to register.  You must pay with a check or a Money Order made out to Region VI ESC (NO CASH).

TSI Exam: We will offer the TSI placement exam for $20.00 at RHS April 6th this exam is available to students enrolling in Dual Credit or graduating seniors.  We have 40 seats – seats will be reserved with payment.  The last day to reserve a seat is March 29th Please see Mrs. Windham.
