March 27, 2016

I was so proud of our students and staff Thursday as our campus hosted the district UIL academic competition. It was awesome to hear all of the compliments from the others schools "beautiful building, organized meet, can’t believe you are still holding classes at the same time as the meet, and tons of remarks on how well behaved our students are..." I sometimes forget all the good so it was nice to be reminded. Huge thank you to Murray Street Church of Christ and Meadowbrook Baptist for sharing their buildings with us for the UIL meet.

The next round of testing for the STAAR End of Course Exams is scheduled for March 29th and March 31st. Students will take the English I and English II assessment. Since a large number of students and teachers will be involved in testing, we will follow an alternate bell schedule and lunch will be later than normal for the students but we have provided snacks for testers. Seniors will only be required to check-in by 9:00am on Tuesday, March 29th and Thursday, March 31st due to EOC exams unless they owe hours or A+ credit recovery. Please make sure students get plenty of rest in preparation for the exam, I know they are ready and will do great things!

Just a reminder we are at that time of year when students need to restock paper and pencils. Take a few minutes this weekend and inventory the backpack; we want to finish the year off on a good note for homework and classwork!

Congratulations to Senior Jacob Aguirre for qualifying for State in Powerlifting. We wish him good luck in his upcoming competition!

National Honor Society had a cookie and lemonade social Thursday afternoon to recognize students who earned A’s and B’s on their report card. It was great way to celebrate such awesome accomplishments this time of year.

We are still waiting on STAAR retest results from December. The state says we will have them by January 21st. We will notify students as soon as we get them.

January is School Board Recognition month! I hope you will join me in expressing appreciation for the Rockdale School Board for their dedication and hard work. Serving as a trustee is a tremendous undertaking and the RISD Board of Trustees is an extraordinary group. Their commitment to students, parents, teachers, programs, and schools has a significant positive impact on the community and directly relates to the current and future successes of Rockdale schools. Thank you RISD Board of Trustees for all you do!

The candy bars have been ordered to begin the prom fundraising for this year. Junior parents that are interested in helping with Prom 2016 and/or Project Graduation 2017, please respond to this email so we can begin planning.

Just a reminder Monday, January 18, 2016 is an early release day in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.

It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over. With January begins a big push to make sure all of our students are ready for the STAAR End of Course Exams, Advanced Placement Tests, and the ACT/SAT and make sure that our seniors are ready to make their big move to life after high school. So much of what we do is try to get students ready for what is to come. These next few months will move fast, and our students have a great deal to learn before they leave us in May. Be prepared as the academics step up a little more and our expectations continue to increase. Report cards were sent home with students today.

Congratulations to Daniel Banda, Junior Hinojosa, David Costilla, and Rodrigo Costilla they placed second today in the team welding completion in LaPorte. They earned numerous tools, equipment, and scholarship money.

Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing students Tuesday, January 5th to start the second semester. Report cards from the third six weeks will be distributed to students the week of January 11th. When we return next week spring semester schedules will be available to students in the rotunda.

Parents if you have had a change of address, email, or a new phone number please contact Gloria Thomas (512) 430-6140 so that we can update your emergency contact information.

Just a reminder we are at that time of year when students need to restock paper, pencils, and folders. Take a few minutes this weekend and inventory the backpack; we want to start the New Year off on a good note for homework and classwork!

Best wishes to you and your family for a great 2016.
