January 18, 2019

Students interested in taking the next level course during 2019-2020 in any of the following programs of study: Construction, Welding, Advanced Floral Design, Health Science, AVID II, or Career Preparation, need to pick up the packet of required forms beginning Monday, January 28. Packets are available outside the office. PALs, Yearbook, and Sports Medicine/Athletic Trainer Packets are also available. All packets are due to the office Wednesday, February 5.

Wednesday, January 23 we will have senior “work sessions” for College Readiness. We will be available to help students complete Financial Aid, College Applications, and Scholarships. Beginning at 5:00pm in the RHS Library.

Chicken Fried Steak Plates: HOSA & NHS sold tickets for a chicken fried steak dinner TODAY 5:00-7:00pm.  Meals can be eaten in the cafeteria or picked up.  There are some extra meals if you are interested in purchasing at the door.

*Class of 2018: Seniors are selling $100 raffle tickets to raise money for Project Graduation.  Winners of the raffle can receive $10,000, $2,000, or $1,000 (only 300 tickets will be sold).  If you are interested in purchasing a ticket visit with a senior or reply to this email and we will put you in touch with a senior.

Class of 2019: Junior students & parents we will have an organizational meeting for Prom 2019 & Project Graduation 2020 on Monday, January 28 6:00pm in the RHS Library.

Exams - the exams listed below will be offered at RHS during the school day:

ACT we will offer the ACT test with writing on Tuesday, April 2. Deadline to register and pay for the test is February 13. The cost of the test is $57. Fee waivers are not available for ACT school day testing. See Mrs. Ingram to register.  

 

SAT we will offer the SAT and the SAT with essay on April 9. Deadline to register and pay for the test is February 28. The cost of the SAT is $47.50. The cost of the SAT with essay is $64.50. Test fee reductions are available to those who qualify for free and reduced lunch. See Mrs. Ingram to register

Yearbook: The yearbook still has brag ad space available for seniors.  They may pick up a form Glenda Walker or t can email GLWalker@rockdaleisd.net or call (512) 430-6140 ext. 2054 for information. Also it is not too late to buy a yearbook at a reduced rate of $47.

Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing students Wednesday, January 9 to start the second semester. Report cards from the third six weeks will be distributed to students Friday, January 11. When we return next week spring semester schedules will be available to students in the rotunda.

Parents if you have had a change of address, email, or a new phone number please contact Roxanne Proudley (512) 430-2011 so that we can update your emergency contact information.

Just a reminder we are at that time of year when students need to restock paper, pencils, and folders. Take a few minutes and inventory the backpack; we want to start the New Year off on a good note for homework and classwork!

­­­­Class of 2020: the junior class will begin selling chocolate in February for their prom fundraiser.  Junior parents that are interested in helping with Prom 2019 and/or Project Graduation 2020, please respond to this email so we can begin planning and set our first meeting date.

Class of 2019: Balfour will be here the 3rd week in January to begin ordering cap & gowns.  Cap & gowns typically run $50.

*Driver’s Education Classes: If you are interested in participating in Driver’s Education please sign-up on the table outside of the cafeteria by January 18. The cost of course is $255 which includes (online coursework spring and driving simulator summer). We must have 25 students registered for the course. *FFA: Members wanting to be on the Judging Team MUST sign up with an Ag teacher, get a Qbank log-in, and complete 10 quizzes with a 90 or better before January 25.  See Mr. Reed for more information.  The first contest is Saturday, January 26 @ Columbus.

*iTigers: Spring semester starts Monday, January 14.

Next week is the last school week of 2018; it’s hard to believe we are halfway through the school year. Our goal is to finish the semester strong and focused on academics.  Encourage your student to check Skyward, work with teachers to reach their academic goals, and study for midterms!

Credit/Hour sheets are due to Mr. Hasselbach Friday, December 21 at noon.  We will offer "Saturday School" Thursday noon-4:00pm for students that need credit hours or need to serve a Saturday School. 

Students exemption letters are due Monday, December 17 at 4:00pm to the front office. The bell schedules for next week are on our webpage and linked below.

Students received progress reports today in 3rd period. After today we have 9.5 school days remaining in the semester.  Please remind your students to stay on top of their assignments, studying for exams, and attending tutorials.  If your student owes “credit hours/ seat time” their forms are due to Mr. Hasselbach by noon Friday, December 21.

Students will receive exemption letters Thursday, December 13 to allow them to plan for midterms.  The exemption letters are due to the front office by 4:00pm Monday, December 17. A copy of the RHS Fall Exam Schedule was sent home with progress reports and is also available on the RHS webpage. 

Just a reminder that due to UIL Competitions RES, RIS, and RJHS will be on an early release schedule Thursday, December 13 but RHS is on regular schedule our early release day takes place the last week of the semester for exams.

I hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving and were able to enjoy time with family and friends.

During the holiday season there are a lot of opportunities for students to volunteer on campus and in the community. This is a great opportunity for students to earn hours toward Silver Cord of Service. Opportunities for service are listed in the rotunda and on the RHS webpage.

Congratulations to Luis Iruegas, Kade Marburger, Miranda Martinez, and Peyton Seibt their artwork was juried into the Central Texas Art Competition, sponsored by the Temple College Visual Arts Department, in Temple Texas.  The exhibit will be open to the public until December 3rd.

Christmas Round-Up: The high school will support Christmas Round-Up by collecting items for the food drive. We will have bins in the office and all items must be received by end of day November 30: 9th grade – Ramen Noodles (6pkgs = 1 item)/ 10th grade – instant potatoes/ 11th grade – canned chicken / 12th grade – cornbread mix (2 pkgs = 1 item). Students can donate 1 of each item for a service hour.

*Class Rings: Balfour will be here with class rings on November 29th during lunches.  Students who have purchased and paid for rings may pick them up that day.  Rings that still have a balance will be held in the office until the balance is paid.  Thank you to all of families and students that participated in the Veteran’s Day assembly Thursday. Thank you to the Veterans that joined us. It was wonderful to see all of Rockdale ISD in the RHS gym celebrating Veterans. I was impressed with the poise of our students that presented and proud of our students in the stands for their participation in the event. Congratulations to sophomore Lillian Phillips our Voice of Democracy winner her speech was a great addition to the Veteran’s Ceremony.

Students received their second six week’s report cards in 3rd period Friday. Please ask them to share the information with you. Here is a copy of the semester exam schedule.

Krispy Kreme Fundraiser:  RHS Rotary Interact are selling Krispy Kreme donuts until Tuesday, November 13. The cost is $10 a dozen. Donuts will be delivered to RHS Monday, November 16. Order from a Rotary Interact member.  Fun fall treat OR awesome for holiday baking!

Merry Christmas Rockdale Shirts: RHS is selling shirts to raise money for the Blue Gold Scholarship benefitting RHS seniors. Shirts are $15 and on sale until November 16. Forms are available in the office and on our website.

Friday, November 2 is the last day of the six weeks. Hard to believe we are only three weeks away from Thanksgiving break and 1/4 through the year. November is a quick month with a lot going on please continue to remind your student to monitor grades and attend tutorials. 

On Thursday, November 8 at 10:00pm we will honor Veterans during an assembly in the high school gym. Many of our students will take part in the assembly. We invite you to attend and look forward to seeing you there.

Wednesday is Halloween this is not a costume day at the high school. Students may support Red Ribbon Week by “Putting a Cap on Drugs” and wearing a hat Wednesday.  We will not run an afterschool / iTigers bus Wednesday due to Halloween and iTigers will be finished at 4:30pm.

Come out and support our Lady Tiger Volleyball Team in Milano today at 4:30pm. They will play Rogers for a tie-breaker for playoffs.

*No Shave November: Fun way to raise money for a good cause. Students interested in participating in No Shave November must pay their $10 by Friday, November 2. Students who participate are eligible for prizes. Money raised will benefit Christmas Round-Up.

*TSI Exam: We will offer the TSI placement exam for $20.00 at RHS Tuesday, November 6 this exam is available to graduating seniors and students interested in Temple College classes for 2019-20. We have 40 seats – seats will be reserved with payment. Please see Mrs. Windham to pay and reserve a seat by Friday, November 2.

Free & Reduced Lunch Forms: Many families qualify for free or reduced lunch for their children.  While some don't fill the application out because they don't eat school lunch, many don't realize that qualifying also helps with SAT/ACT fees, college application fees, and scholarships. If you have questions or need help filling out the form please contact the office. 

Voice of Democracy: If you are interested in participating in the VFW Voice of Democracy contest contact Mrs. Walker for more information GLWalker@Rockdaleisd.net.  Essays are due October 18.  Contest winners will read their essay at the RISD Veteran’s Assembly and are eligible to win cash & scholarship prizes.

The 2nd six weeks begins Monday please encourage your student to get a strong start; the first semester of school sets the tone for the year. Students will receive their report cards Friday, October 5 to bring home.

Wednesday, October 3 is Early Release for students at noon and professional development for RHS staff the remainder of the day.    Students will be on an alternate bell schedule Wednesday.

ASVAB Exam: RHS will offer the exam Wednesday, October 3. Sign up with Mrs. Ingram in her office. The test is free. The ASVAB is traditionally a military aptitude test but most recently it has been used as a career inventory to find strengths and interests. Deadline to register is MONDAY.

Battle of the Bell Shirts: Shirts are now on sale. Please contact any senior or the RHS office. Order forms for seniors are available at the RHS Office. Shirts are $10.00. Orders are due by Friday, October 5.

*Texas Teen Book Festival: Student interested in attending the Texas Teen Book Festival Saturday, October 6 sign up with any RHS English teacher by Thursday, October 7.

UIL Academic: Sign-up for UIL Events is in the downstairs C hallway.  UIL Academic is open to all interested students 9th-12th grade.  NHS students must participate and compete in an academic UIL event, Skills USA, Band Solo/Ensemble contest, or FFA LDE/CDE Contest.
